DAYTON, Tenn. -- The county that was the site of the Scopes "Monkey Trial" over the teaching of evolution is asking lawmakers to amend state law so the county can charge homosexuals with crimes against nature.
The Rhea County commissioners approved the request 8-0 Tuesday.
Commissioner J.C. Fugate, who introduced the measure, also asked the county attorney to find a way to enact an ordinance banning homosexuals from living in the county.
"We need to keep them out of here," Fugate said.
The vote was denounced by Matt Nevels, president of the Chattanooga chapter of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
"That is the most farfetched idea put forth by any kind of public official," Nevels said. "I'm outraged."
Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Texas' sodomy laws as a violation of adults' privacy.
Rhea County is one of the most conservative counties in Tennessee. It holds an annual festival commemorating the 1925 trial at which John T. Scopes was convicted of teaching evolution. The verdict was thrown out on a technicality. The trial became the subject of the play and movie Inherit the Wind.
In 2002, a federal judge ruled unconstitutional the teaching of a Bible class in the public schools.
I wouldn't be surprised if Cincinnati tried the same thing.
Mike Gallagher was discussing this today, and many of his callers agreed with it! Then again, it's not like Mike's target audience is...shall we say....well, let's just say there aren't a whole lot of chess players in his audience....anyway, something like this is so ridiculous I almost wonder if it wasn't started by someone in the gay community (perhaps a government person still in the closet) a la a modern-day U.S.S. Maine event. I mean, even if you did feel this way, you'd have to know going in that a Court wouldn't let it stand 5 seconds. Why waste taxpayer money?
IMO, the gay advocates have pushed the envelope a little too far with the whole marriage thing, and the good ole boys are getting tired of it.
Personally, I don't think it's a choice, because I can't imagine wanting to be a social pariah. I also think that I know way more about the gay lifestyle than I ever wanted to, and I'm (more than) beginning to resent the "in your face" attitude.
I don't care what people do behind closed doors, but I do care about having to hear about it. I mean, it's like those freaks who are obsessed by trains. If the obession keeps them off the streets, fine, but when they bring it out into the open... well, some things are better kept private.
I use to not care about people's sexuality, but I am also tired of having it pushed in my face.
Once again I ask what is so gay about one man butt fucking another man?
And for those of you who don't think gay's are targeting your kids, you need to go see what your kids are reading.
